Finnish streamer fined heavily as Helsinki opens its gambling market and tackles unregulated advertising. What does this mean for Germany and our streamers?

Well, even the resourceful Lisa Lustich is quite surprised! While we in Germany are still struggling with the excesses of unregulated gambling advertising on Twitch and YouTube, our Nordic neighbor Finland is getting serious. A report from iGamingToday on June 23, 2026, makes us sit up and take notice: A well-known Finnish Twitch streamer was slapped with a hefty fine of around 47,000 Euros by the police. The reason? He was cheerfully promoting competitors of the state monopolist Veikkaus, and all without a license. Ouch, that hurts the wallet!

But this is no coincidence or arbitrary action. Finland is about to open its gambling market to private providers in 2027. And before the floodgates open, a tough cleanup is underway. The Finnish police are specifically cracking down on gambling influencers who use their reach to promote unlicensed casinos. This is a clear signal: Those who don't play by the rules will pay. And not just a little.

One has to imagine: 47,000 Euros! That's more than an annual salary for many employees. And all for a few clicks and promotional videos. This case clearly shows how seriously the Finns take the regulation of the gambling market. This is not about minor offenses, but about player protection and compliance with clear legal requirements. A role model that Germany might want to examine more closely.

And this is exactly where we draw the parallel to our domestic situation. Anyone on Twitch or YouTube will certainly be annoyed by German streamers who cheerfully promote platforms like Stake or various casinos with a Curaçao license. These providers often operate without a German GGL license and are therefore not subject to the strict player protection measures we have in this country. A click on these links can quickly lead to players falling into a trap and losing their money with unregulated providers.

The German gambling market, which has been more strictly regulated since the State Treaty on Gambling 2021, is struggling with similar problems. While reputable, GGL-licensed providers such as JackpotPiraten, OnlineCasino DE, Merkur Slots, bwin Casino, Tipico Games, or LeoVegas DE have to adhere to strict rules, advertising for illegal offers in the grey area is flourishing. The authorities are active here, but the case in Finland shows that one can still step up efforts to achieve a truly deterrent effect.

It is high time that a stronger awareness of this problem is created in Germany as well. Influencers bear an immense responsibility for their audience, especially when it comes to sensitive topics like gambling. Anyone who promotes dubious providers purely out of greed for profit not only endangers their own followers but also undermines the painstakingly established protective measures of the regulated market.

Finnish politics has recognized that consistent enforcement of rules is essential to ensure a fair and safe gambling market. With the upcoming market opening in 2027, they are creating clear conditions and sending an unequivocal message to all stakeholders. This is a brave step that shows that consumer protection and regulation can go hand in hand, even in a transforming market.

Perhaps we should let this Finnish wind also blow into German sails. Stricter monitoring and hefty penalties for streamers who continue to promote unlicensed gambling offers could have a similar deterrent effect in this country. It's about creating transparency and protecting players from the pitfalls of the black market. Because at the end of the day, we all want only one thing: to be able to try our luck safely and fairly, preferably with providers like JackpotPiraten or OnlineCasino DE, who know what's appropriate.
