Powerball kommt in die UK National Lottery: Tickets ab 21. Juli

The UK's National Lottery will introduce Powerball starting July 21, pending regulatory approval. Tickets will cost £4, and Allwyn UK aims to raise approximately £1 billion for good causes over the next five years.

The UK National Lottery is poised to introduce one of the world's largest lotteries: Powerball. Tickets will be available from July 21, with the first draw for UK players scheduled for July 23. Allwyn UK, the operator of the National Lottery, aims to expand its offerings and generate more funds for good causes across the United Kingdom. This move marks another step in Allwyn's modernization strategy, bringing a well-known US product to the European market.

Powerball is internationally renowned for its gigantic jackpots. Its largest ever prize in 2022 amounted to $2.04 billion. In the UK, jackpots will also be uncapped. With this step, Allwyn UK not only seeks to increase the appeal of the National Lottery but also to significantly boost revenue for charitable projects.

Numbers and facts

The launch of the Powerball lottery in the UK is scheduled for July 21. Tickets will be priced at £4 each. Players can purchase them through retail outlets, the National Lottery website, and its app. The first draw open to UK players is planned for July 23. This introduction is subject to final approval. Draws will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, with ticket sales closing at 11:55 PM UK time on the night before each draw.

Powerball jackpots in the UK will start at £12 million and will be uncapped. The game is globally known for exceptionally large top prizes, having produced seven jackpots exceeding $1 billion. There will also be UK-exclusive prize tiers, such as a fixed £8 prize for matching two main numbers and a guaranteed £1 million for matching five main numbers.

Rebecca Paul, President and CEO of the Tennessee Lottery and former President of the World Lottery Association (WLA), expressed optimism: > “This next step brings us closer to a thrilling milestone for Powerball. More players means faster-growing jackpots, more excitement and even greater impact for the communities we serve.”

Allwyn UK expects to generate approximately £1 billion for UK good causes over the next five years. The introduction of Powerball is a significant component of this projection.

Background

The integration of Powerball is part of Allwyn’s comprehensive modernization initiative, which has shaped the operation of the National Lottery in the UK since it took over the fourth license block in April 2024. This initiative includes not only the expansion of the game offerings but also the renewal of retail terminals and new partnerships with major companies such as Aldi, GoPuff, and Vodafone. The goal is to improve the accessibility and attractiveness of National Lottery products.

Allwyn UK CEO Andria Vidler emphasized the importance of the expansion: > “We’re excited to give National Lottery players the chance to dream bigger, while supporting thousands of Good Cause projects across the UK every week. Powerball jackpots can soar into the billions, offering breath-taking sums with the potential to transform lives and communities.”

Vidler announced a major marketing campaign to promote Powerball’s arrival. The company hopes for strong player participation to quickly celebrate its first UK Powerball winner.

Why it matters for German players

For German players, the introduction of Powerball into the UK National Lottery does not directly change anything for now. In Germany, the online gambling market is strictly regulated, especially by the Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021 (GlüStV 2021). This treaty sets clear rules for legal providers. These include central player protection measures such as the 1-Euro stake limit per spin for slot machines and a monthly deposit limit of 1,000 Euros, controlled via the central monitoring system LUGAS.

German players who want to gamble online legally and safely should exclusively use providers listed on the whitelist of the Joint Gambling Authority of the States (GGL). These casinos hold an official German license and are subject to strict German regulations on player protection and addiction prevention. Lotteries like Powerball in the UK do not directly fall under this regulation but may become accessible to German players through international lottery distributors. Nevertheless, GGL regulations remain decisive for the majority of online gambling in Germany.

What it means for GGL-licensed casinos

The introduction of such a large international lottery product in a neighboring country can have indirect effects on the German market. Large jackpots, such as those of Powerball, are globally appealing. They could lead to more German players participating in such international draws via lottery intermediaries, even if not directly through GGL-licensed casinos.

For GGL-licensed casinos, the strict domestic regulation remains the main focus. They must continue to consistently implement the requirements of GlüStV 2021. This includes adhering to the 1-Euro limit per game round, the monthly deposit limit of 1,000 Euros, and comprehensive integration with LUGAS for monitoring player behavior and preventing gambling addiction. The GGL enforces these rules to ensure a safe and responsible gaming environment in Germany. While international lotteries could pose some competition, the advantage of GGL-licensed casinos lies in their transparency and clear legality within Germany.
